The photos on this page show aerial views of Karratha, WA, as it was in the mid-1980s.

The upper shot, taken on 17 August 1985 from Cessna 172 VH-OZY of Horizon Aviation. The shot is looking south-west and shows the majority of the airport buildings. Run your cursor over the photo for a description of the major buildings.

At this time fire and rescue coverage was provided by the local Fire Brigade. An ARFF Fire Station was later constructed near the Control Tower.

The lower shot shows the airport Terminal Building and apron from airside, taken on 23 August 1987 from Cessna 172M VH-KFS. Note the lack of security fencing, considered unnecessary in those days.

Left: The layout of Karratha aerodrome from the Department's publication Aerodrome Diagrams (ADDGM), 24 October 1985 amendment. Proximity to the important iron ore port of Dampier was the raison d'etre of Karratha aerodrome.

Among other aircraft, Horizon Aviation operated former Departmental Aero Commander 680s VH-CAX and VH-CAY.
